I.V. Fluid Hydration Helps Reverse the Effects of Dehydration

Administered Based on the Provider’s Clinical Assessment

Dehydration can be caused by losing too much fluid, not drinking enough water or fluids, or both. The human body loses water through sweating and producing urine, so you must constantly replace the lost fluids, by drinking water and other beverages.

Frequent urination, persistent diarrhea and vomiting, excessive sweating, and burns are some of the most common causes of dehydration in adults.

Dehydration in sick children is often a combination of refusing to eat or drink and losing fluid from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever.

Know the Symptoms of Dehydration

  • Lethargy
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

Drinking fluids is usually enough to reverse mild dehydration. In more severe cases, however, intravenous (I.V.) fluid hydration is necessary to rehydrate the body and avoid potentially serious health consequences.

Severe Dehydration May Cause Additional Symptoms

  • Low blood pressure
  • Sunken eyes
  • Reduced perspiration
  • Dry, shriveled skin
  • Increased heart rate
  • Fever

If you have any of the symptoms of persistent or severe dehydration, visit Amory Urgent Care between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. any day of the week for immediate treatment.

We offer immediate treatments like I.V. fluid therapy for severe dehydration.

Fluid Replacement via Intravenous Hydration

Your Amory Urgent Care provider can give you intravenous fluids to replace fluids lost through sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and frequent urination. These fluids often contain potassium, glucose, and sodium, which are electrolytes your body needs to function normally.

Different types of intravenous fluids are used to treat dehydration. Normal saline contains sodium and chlorine, so it replaces lost fluid and prevents or corrects some types of electrolyte imbalances. We may also use a solution of dextrose and water to treat dehydration. One of our experienced medical professionals will determine the right fluid to treat your condition and help you feel better as soon as possible.

You may also need to replace lost fluids by drinking sports beverages or sipping clear broths or plain water. Because caffeinated beverages promote fluid excretion, you should avoid them if you have any symptoms of dehydration.

At Amory Urgent Care, we provide a wide range of urgent care services to address medical issues, from I.V. fluid hydration and physical exams to colds, flu, fever, and much more.
